Worried about a scar on the neck? Learn about thyroid surgery with small or hidden scars, who it suits and how scars heal, and meet a thyroid surgeon in Varanasi.
A thyroid operation is often advised for a nodule, a goitre or a thyroid cancer, and for many patients the first worry is not only the operation but also the scar on the neck. This is a very natural concern, especially for young women and for people whose work keeps them in front of others. The good news is that thyroid surgery today does not always mean a long scar across the front of the neck.
Options to keep the thyroid scar small or hidden
- Small incision in a natural skin crease: in conventional thyroid surgery, a carefully placed incision in a skin fold of the neck heals into a thin line that fades with time.
- Endoscopic thyroid surgery: the thyroid is removed through a few small incisions with the help of a camera. Depending on the technique, the incisions can be on the neck or away from it, for example inside the mouth, in the armpit or on the chest, so that no scar shows on the neck. - Robotic thyroid surgery: a robotic system is used to reach the thyroid through a remote incision. See robotic thyroid surgery.
Which approach is right for you?
The safest operation for you is more important than the smallest scar. The surgeon decides the approach after examining you and looking at your ultrasound and needle-test report. A scar-conscious approach is usually considered when:
- the thyroid nodule or goitre is of limited size,
- the nodule is benign, or a thyroid cancer is small and low-risk and has not spread,
- you have not had earlier neck surgery or radiation, and you are medically fit for a longer operation.
If the thyroid is very large, if a cancer is advanced or has spread to the lymph nodes, or if the operation cannot be completed safely through small incisions, conventional open surgery is the right choice. Your safety always comes first, and the surgeon explains this to you before the operation.
How scars heal after thyroid surgery
- A fresh scar looks red or pink and slightly raised for the first weeks. This is normal.
- Most scars become flatter and paler over several months and are far less noticeable after a year.
- Follow the wound-care advice you are given, keep the area protected from strong sun, and use a scar cream or silicone gel only when your surgeon advises it.
- If you tend to form thick scars (keloids), tell your surgeon before the operation.
